Using an e-cigarette as a smoking cessation device will double the chances of a smoker quitting, according to an article published on 98fm.com.

The Health Watchdog has been examining the most effective methods of quitting smoking. Previously, e-cigarettes have been found the best method of quitting by a different study.

The Health Information and Quality Authority, a government-funded agency in Ireland, has been investigating the success and cost effectiveness of smoking cessation methods.

The Irish health bosses now consider e-cigarettes as a viable method of quitting for the first time.

Dr Máirín Ryan of the Health Information and Quality Authority said: “What we do know about e-cigarettes is that they are likely to be safer than cigarette smoke because there is no combustion and there is no exposure to many of the toxins and the carcinogenic chemicals that you find in tobacco.”

“However, the long-term effects of e-cigarettes are unknown at this stage”, added Dr Ryan.

According to research published in the Chemical Research in Toxicology, e-cig vapour doesn’t cause oxidative stress in viable lung epithelial cells, unlike regular tobacco.

Moreover, a separate study found that toxic levels in e-cigs are 95% less than in regular tobacco, reaffirming a previous study by Public Health England that found e-cigs to be around 95% safer than regular tobacco.

This reinforces the report published on 98fm.com that e-cigarettes could double a smoker’s chances of quitting.
