Ban E-Liquid Flavours, Urges Manhattan Assembly Woman

A Manhattan lawmaker is aiming to stop teens from vaping by banning flavoured e-liquids. Many people use e-cigs to help them quit smoking, and vapers have in the past said that e-cig flavours are crucial to getting them through the process. Linda Rosenthal, Democratic Assemblywoman in Manhattan, believes that e-liquid products are “meant to appeal to kids”, and introduced a bill in September to stop the sale and distribution of e-liquids in New York.

“I don’t know many adults who would like to inhale bubble gum or strawberry vapour,” added Rosenthal. Julie Hart of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network supports Rosenthal’s legislation, and echoes her sentiments and is seeking a ban on e-liquid flavours. “Sweet products have fuelled the popularity of e-cigarettes to kids,”

Hart said. “Chocolate, gummy bear, cotton candy, cookies and cream — these are all things that are enticing to kids.” Defending vaping is Gregory Conley, the president of the American Vaping Association, who said that e-liquid flavours help users disconnect from the flavour of tobacco.

“This is yet another attempt by Assemblywoman Rosenthal to shut down and leave unemployed the owners and employees of hundreds of vapour product retail small businesses throughout New York,” Conley said. The bill has not yet been introduced to the GOP-controlled state Senate.
