This Sunday (22nd April) marks Earth Day 2018, the annual environmental movement that aims to end plastic pollution and protect the world’s environment and natural beauty. First started in 1970, Earth Day, which aims to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide, originally motivated 20 million Americans to help raise awareness of the cause.

With their hard work and dedication, Earth Day helped push through various acts in the United States, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act. Smoking and vaping are two lifestyle choices that are often pitted together with various variants, such as health effects, cost, convenience and more.

However, the impacts on the environment of vaping and smoking have distinct differences. Vaping is by nature recycling. A vaper buys bottles e-liquid and refills the same tank, whereas smokers burn through trillions of cigarettes every year, which results in absurd amounts of discarded non-biodegradable cigarette butts improperly disposed of. It is also estimated that around 1.5 million trees are cut down per day to make cigarettes.

Growing tobacco also has a negative impact on the earth, and since cigarette manufacturers produce so many cigarettes, lots of land, particularly in smaller and middle-income countries, is used.
