Everything You Need to Know About Vape Coils

Everyone knows that vape coils are an essential part of your vape hardware… but how much do you really know about this small piece of kit? The vape coil and wick within any given device functions as a bridge between the e liquid in your tank and the vapour that you inhale. It is crucial to maintain the condition of your vape coil, because it can mean the difference between an intense vape experience and one that fails to launch. Whether you want to know when to change vape coils, how to clean vape coils, or how to choose between nickel, kanthal, and ceramic coil vapes for builds, we’ve got you covered. Keep reading to discover everything you need to know about vape coils.

What are vape coils?

Inside your vape tank there is an atomiser. The vape coil and wick resides there, and forms part of the atomiser’s head.
But what does the atomiser head do? In technical terms, the battery creates an energy output which the atomiser then converts into heat. Inside the head, the vape coil wire sits snugly with the wicking material. Once the coil is heated, the e liquid is converted into the vapour that you inhale with each puff.

When to change vape coils?

Buying vape replacement coils is an unavoidable part of vaping. And if you put it off, you might experience a burnt vape taste. This is the most common and unpleasant sign that you need to replace your coil. Other less common signs include a gurgling sound coming from your vape pen, as well as the potential for your e liquid to leak. Ultimately, the length of time that your coil lasts depends entirely on how much you vape every day.

Vape coils UK materials

There are a wide variety of vape coils for sale on the UK market. The most popular vape coil materials include nickel, nichrome, kanthal, titanium, stainless steel, and ceramic coil vape options. To learn more about these materials, check out our Everything You Need to Know About Vape Coil Materials blog post.

What are vape coil builds?

Many advanced vapers opt to create their own vape coil builds. Using materials such as kanthal, stainless steel, and nickel, vapers can create their own coils using vape coil wire. Although there are many vape coil lists on the internet purporting that vape coil kits are essential for building coils, you can begin with a few simple tools. Here are the essentials:

● Scissors
● Cotton
● Ceramic tweezers
● Resistance wire
● Flush cutters
● Small metal rod

Wicking materials

Remember the wicking material we mentioned earlier? lt plays an essential part in pushing along the process that takes the e liquid in your tank and turns it into vapour. Without it, there would be no vapour production. Wicking material is intertwined with the coil itself to ensure an even coverage. The most common wicking materials are cotton and silica rope.

Cotton

By far the most widely used material, cotton is now the top choice for beginner and more advanced users alike. We recommend organic cotton as opposed to manufactured, as the latter can contain dangerous chemicals if not produced correctly. Cotton is favoured because it is a highly absorbent material. However, some first-time users report that there is a ‘break-in’ period with cotton wicking material which means that their second tank tastes better than the first.

Silica Rope

This material was more common in older generation vape devices, until the community discovered that cotton is far more efficient. A positive of using silica rope in your vape coil builds is that it is a long-lasting material that creates an intense flavour experience.

Stainless Steel Mesh

Although this is one of the lesser known wicking materials, there are still vapers who remain loyal to stainless steel mesh because it provides an intense taste and the material itself lasts for a while. It is most commonly used in mouth-to-lung vaping kits. We only recommend this material for advanced users because it is tricky to use. It has to be continually torched over a naked flame in order to be used in vape coil builds.

High resistance coils VS low resistance coils

The resistance level of your coil plays a significant part in altering your vape experience. Once the vape community discovered this, manufacturers developed an entirely new style of vaping.
Sub ohm vaping occurs when your device uses a vape coils UK product that has less than 1.0ohm resistance. These coils are known as low resistance coils, which require higher powered batteries to operate. Lower resistance coils promise bigger vapour production, but they are not suitable for every device on the market, and they do use more vape juice per puff.

In contrast, high resistance coils use less vape juice and are compatible with most pens. Unfortunately, they do produce less cloud vaper, meaning that cloud chasers should stick to sub ohm devices.

How to clean vape coils?

Using high VG e liquids can create gunk buildup in your vape coil. This reduces the flavour output and creates an unpleasant burnt taste when you inhale. That’s why it’s essential to clean your vape coils and vape tank regularly. There are different methods for cleaning replaceable and rebuildable coils.

Replaceable Coils

You will find these coil heads attached to clearomizers and sub ohm tanks. If the atomiser for these devices is covered in a dark substance, then you know it is time to clean your coil. Cleaning your coil can increase its lifespan and avoid the burnt taste that comes with too much gunk build-up.

1. Soak - put your coil in a bowl of ethanol and allow it to soak for a few hours. If you are unable to source ethanol, use vodka or vinegar.

2. Clean - hold the coil underneath running water for a few minutes until all of the ethanol has drained away.

3. Drying - to ensure that the water goes into the wicking holes, blow air into the coil.

4. Sit - allow the coil to sit until the water has evaporated completely.

Rebuildable Coils

Cleaning vape coils is essential to ensure a top performance vape every time. Before you begin cleaning these coils, you should hit the fire button to ensure that there is no e liquid left in your coil.

1. Hold the atomiser underneath running water.

2. Scrub the rebuildable coils with a cleaning tool. If you don’t have access to a cleaning tool, use a toothbrush.

3. Hold the coils underneath running water.

4. Dry burn the coils slightly in order to ensure that there is no more water in the coils.

How long do vape coils last?

Eventually, cleaning vape coils won’t be enough. Your coils are going to be too gunked-up and will produce a burnt taste that creates harsh throat hits. Keep reading to discover our recommended coils.
