Menthol looks likely to be among the e-liquid flavours banned by Germany as it transposes the EU’s daunting Tobacco Products Directive (TPD). The TPD leaves decisions on flavouring e-liquids to the member states. The German implementation of the TPD will also limit nicotine content and restrict other ingredients and additives. They’re also planning to ban any ingredients that might sound healthy to users, like vitamins or other additives. They’re also hoping to ban stimulants like caffeine and tautine from e-liquids. Menthol e-liquid is being targeted as there is reportedly some evidence suggesting menthol smokers are extremely addicted to nicotine and will find quitting tougher. Therefore, there will be a complete ban on menthol in combustibles in 2022, reportedly. Meanwhile, in the US, e-cig regulators the Food and Drug Administration is considering a ban on menthol cigarettes.
