Kick the Habit: Study Finds E-Cigs are 60% More Effective than Nicotine Patches or Gum
A recent survey of 5,862 smokers in England found that e-cigarettes have a huge effect in helping people to quit smoking traditional cigarettes. Many in this study have tried to quit smoking by using an electronic cigarette without any other help including professional support and medicines.
This research was published by the journal Addiction and illustrated how e-cigarettes could be a great addition towards people stopping smoking and could change the health of the public as well as saving millions of pounds, which is currently spent by the NHS in the UK, on illnesses related to smoking. Professor Robert West from University College London lead the study and found that twenty percent of people who were involved had actually quit smoking traditional cigarettes.
He found that traditional measures such as nicotine chewing gum and nicotine patches. Many people feel the use of e-cigarettes could make smoking seem ‘normal’ again, yet Professor West feels there is no current evidence to prove this. Alison Cox, Cancer Research UK’s Head of Tobacco Policy stated that: “E-cigarettes may have a role in helping people to quit smoking but while the rapid rise in their popularity suggests a real opportunity, the evidence for their effectiveness is so far limited.” Cancer Research UK is currently in the midst of funding necessary research into e-cigarettes as they found smoking is the main cause of many cancers.
Just in the UK, smoking traditional cigarettes take more than one in four lives. If electronic cigarettes can be the way for people to quit traditional smoking, it should not be ruled out as another option for people. The NHS Stop Smoking services are still the most effective way to quit smoking but there is evidence to show that electronic cigarettes can improve public health, which shows the need for more research into the devices which could prove to be a positive switch compared to tobacco.
