More Teens Vaping Than Smoking, Statistics Show
There are more teenagers in Wigan reported as vaping than smoking, according to data published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre. The data illustrates that 4.9% of 15-year-olds identified themselves as smokers, whilst 6% identified as vapers. The declining amount of smokers has vastly been attributed to the ban on smoking in pubs and restaurants. It should be noted that many pubs and restaurants do allow the use of e-cigarettes. Research carried out by Glasgow University says the number of 15-year-old smokers has dropped by 20% in the last 10 years since the ban. Despite these encouraging figures, Dr Penny Woods, Chief executive of the British Lung Foundation, insists the war is not yet won as around 200,000 young people take up smoking every year. “Ongoing government efforts, including targeted awareness campaigns, are needed if we are to see this number fall,” says Dr Woods. E-cigarettes are becoming more and more popular in the UK, with a reported 2.6 million users. According to a recent study, E-cigs are helping thousands to stop smoking for good.
