US President Donald Trump is reportedly a threat to the vaping industry as he’s previously said he will punish China for their economic activities, placing doubt on the future of trade between the two countries. Although Trump has promised to cut federal regulation by 70-80%, offering the vaping community a glimmer of hope from the Food and Drug Administration, it appears the controversial President might still have a detrimental affect on e-cigs. E-cigarettes are originally from China and the East Asian country is responsible for 90% of the devices sold around the world. Jan Verleur, CEO and co-founder of one of the world’s biggest e-cig companies, is optimistic about Trump’s tough stance on federal regulation, but worried about Trump’s relations with China. “The vast majority of our products are manufactured in southern China, specifically Guangdong province. We’re an American company but we have a factory in Shenzhen and that’s our lifeblood,” said Verleur. "To manufacture goods in China levels the playing field because we can do it cheap enough that a guy with a computer who’s a good designer with a couple of engineers in the room can design a circuit board, a structure, and they can suddenly manufacture it there. And now they’re competing against some massive company that’s been entrenched for 100 years." During his long and often controversial and heated campaign, said: "The U.S. Trade Representative will bring trade cases against China. China’s unfair subsidy behaviour is prohibited by the terms of its entrance to the WTO. If China does not stop its illegal activities, including its theft of American trade secrets, Donald Trump will use every lawful presidential power to remedy trade disputes, including the application of tariffs." Moreover, Trump has named Robert Lighthizer as his trade representative, an outspoken critic of China’s trade policies. It looks like Trump's China crackdown may be something for the vaping community to worry about. Trump has been urged to battle the FDA’s e-cig regulation by some vaping advocates and fellow Republicans, but it remains unclear on what his thoughts of vaping are.
