Everything You Need to Know About Vape Coils

Vape coils are an essential part of your vape atomiser. Without coils, there would be no vapour. The most popular materials amongst coil building enthusiasts across the UK are ceramic, nichrome, stainless steel, nickel, and kanthal. Although all of these materials provide a satisfying vape experience, they do differ in terms of flavour, vapour production, and likelihood of creating dry hits. Browse through this handy guide to explore all the different pros and cons for each material.

Ceramic Coils

Ceramic coils have a longer lifespan than any other coils on the market due to their reduced ability to carry heat. The ceramic casing protects the coil itself from any damage caused by potential dry hits. If you use ceramic wire, you will not experience the typical burning sensation that occurs when a dry hit happens.

Another benefit of ceramic is that it has a porous nature. The chance of e liquid pooling around your ceramic coil is greatly reduced, meaning that you are less likely to experience spit backs.

If you want to use a ceramic wire in your kit, be aware that this material consumes e cig liquid quicker than your average coil. This is due to some of the performance enhancing properties that the material boasts, so it's up to you whether the trade off is worth it.

Nickel Coils

We recommend nickel for DIY enthusiasts who have experience with building their own coils because the material itself is somewhat fiddly. Its soft nature means that it can become deformed once inside the atomiser. Despite this, it is ideal for use within a device that has temperature control functions because of its low resistance.

It’s also important to remember that people with nickel allergies should avoid this material.

Nichrome Heating Coils

Nichrome coils are ideal for vapers who prefer using devices with variable wattages. The nichrome coil temperature control feature allows you to tailor your vape to your preferences. Nichrome is composed of nickel and chromium, and often comes in an 80:20 split. Unlike nickel, nichrome retains its shape. Because nichrome heats so quickly, there is a very real possibility of dry hits with this material. That’s why we only recommend it for advanced vapers who are accustomed to sub ohm vaping and know how to navigate this problem.

What are kanthal coils?

Kanthal is the ideal material for vapers who are just beginning to build their own coils. It holds its shape and is easy to find in vape shops all over the county. This alloy is made from iron, chromium, and aluminum, and accommodates variable wattage devices. Another benefit of kanthal coils is that they are made from a durable and affordable material, which has made this material a fan favourite among DIY enthusiasts.

Stainless Steel Coils

We love this flexible material because it can be used in either wattage or temperature control mode. It also holds its shape, which means that you do not have to worry about deformities in your atomiser. You can buy different grades of stainless steel coils, but we recommend 430-grade because it stands the test of time. It is important to remember that the majority of stainless steel coil grades contain approximately 10% of nickel, meaning that people with allergies should avoid it where possible.
