In recent years, vaping has become increasingly popular and is now offering people an alternative to smoking. But what is vaping?
In its simplest form, vaping involves using an electronic device to inhale the vapour from a liquid. These liquids can contain also contain nicotine should users require it.
The vapour is created using a vaporizer and they can be found in a wide range of shapes and sizes. However, all of these devices can be used with a huge variety of e-liquids that come in a range of flavours to suit all tastes and desires.
Since its introduction, vaping has been adopted by millions of people around the world. It is now considered to be the modern cigarette which is why more and more people are making the switch.
Vapour is the particles that originate from a liquid or a solid that have been turned into a gaseous form. In the world of vaping, the vapour comes from an e-liquid and is often flavoured although it can contain nicotine. It is inhaled by the user and once exhaled it produces a thicker cloud of vapour than that seen from cigarette smoke. However, due to its consistency, it disappears into the atmosphere, unlike cigarette smoke which can linger.
Vaping has a longer history than many realise. The first e-cigarette, which is also an alternative name for vaping was actually an idea that was first discussed in 1927. However, vaping was first acknowledged in 1963 by Herbert A. Gilbert. It was in 1965 that he patented the invention although he did not make his idea or his invention known.
It was not until the 1980s when vaping started to gather momentum. Phil Ray and Normal Jackson saw the potential of vaping and began to work towards making it mainstream and commercialised. Despite this, the FDA, after identifying the harmful effects of smoking, banned the idea and prevented tobacco companies from introducing them to the market.
All of this led us to vaping as we know it today. It was a Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik who made the very first e-cigarette. In 2006, his idea was introduced to the world after some assistance from his employer. He had one real motivation for creating the e-cigarette and that was to reduce the number of people who smoked after his father died from a smoking-related illness.
In the US, the very first e-cigarette was released and it instantly became a trend. Since then, vaporizers or e-cigarettes have been modified, altered and redesigned to create a wide range of models that come in a manner of shapes and sizes.
So, if you have taken a look at the many different models available, it might feel as though you don’t know where to begin. However, it is important to know that there are two main types of kit that you can choose from.
A mouth to lung kit or classic inhales as they are also known, work in a similar way to smoking a cigarette. Users will draw on the vape before inhaling, replicating the smoking action, making it a great alternative for those who are looking to quit smoking.
Unlike the mouth to lung kit where you draw first before inhaling, the direct to lung kit delivers the vapour straight to the lungs. Vapers who choose this kind of vaping will commonly use sub ohm devices. What this means is that they are vaping with a resistance that is lower than one ohm. Therefore, the coils receive ore power and that leads to more flavour and bigger clouds.
Vaping has grown in popularity and it is now offering a simple solution for those who want to move away from smoking traditional cigarettes.
In 2011, around seven million people were vaping around the world. Since then, that number has jumped up to around 41 million with estimates claiming that there will be 55 million users by 2021.
As more people look to quit smoking it means that spending on e-cigarettes has also increased. The global market is now worth around $20bn which is a significant increase from $6.9bn only five years ago.
Around the world, the USA has the largest market when it comes to e-cigarettes although the UK follows closely behind.
So, vaping is clearly a popular past time for many and it does not look as though things are going to change soon. If you are considering quitting smoking or you simply want to enjoy the range of flavours on offer, then vaping is perfect for you.
