Why do myCigara need to verify your age?
At myCigara, we exist to make the UK smoke-free. We offer our customers a variety of vaping products because we believe that e-cigarettes are an effective and viable smoking cessation aid.
Our customers’ health and safety is of key concern to us, so we ensure that we only serve customers who are pre-existing vape users and smokers looking to quit smoking, and take issues of underage vaping very seriously. As such, we operate according to the “Think 25” policy in all our retail stores, and ask customers to go through an age verification process for their first online purchase.
In the UK, there is a minimum legal age of 18 for purchasing e-cigarettes, vape kits, e-liquids, and any other vape-adjacent products. Thus, in order to complete your purchase with myCigara, we require you to confirm that you are of legal smoking age. To do so, you will be asked to verify your age through the 1account age verification service.
How do myCigara verify your age?
When you register or make your first purchase with us, we will ask for your name, billing/shipping address, and date of birth. This information will be used to verify your age.
To securely verify your age, we use the industry-standard 1account service. By purchasing an age-restricted product from myCigara, you agree to let us share your provided personal information with 1account and their third-party data providers.
When you have completed your online checkout and reached the order confirmation page, a pop-up from 1account will appear asking to verify your age. If you miss the pop-up, or accidentally close the purchase browser window/tab early, you will also receive an email directing you to the verification process.
As a customer, it is your responsibility to ensure that you complete age verification as soon as possible; your order will not be dispatched until this process has been completed.
How does 1account age verification work?
The 1account service pulls your personal info which you provided during checkout (e.g. name, address, DoB, telephone number) in order to run a background check to verify your age. If you’re checking out as a guest and haven’t supplied a telephone number, you will need to enter this on the verification screen.
1account is a completely free service; when you register you will be sent a one-time PIN by SMS, which is used to complete your registration with two-factor authentication. For each of their age verification methods, they obtain the minimal amount of information required. Usually, the most straightforward and anonymous way of doing this is by supplying your mobile phone number.
If 1account is unable to verify you based off this information, you will be asked to supply one of the following forms of additional identification:
●Electoral roll information
●National ID (i.e passport)
If you prefer, you can send a copy of your photo ID (i.e. passport or driver’s license) to us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org in order for us to verify your age. Age verification is a one-time process; after your first order, you will not be required to repeat it when making purchases from the same customer account.
